Fresno State – RIMI
Research Infrastructure for Minority Institution

- National Institute of Health (NIH) is extremely interested in developing biomedical research projects in the areas of health and health disparity.
- With Provost Jeri Echeverria as the PI, the university was awarded this infrastructure grant for minority institutions.
- The total grant is $4.5 Million over 5 years.
- The Project Director for the Biomedical Research and contact person is Dr. Krish Krishnan (Chemistry) and the
Behavioral Research and training will be directed by Dr. Lynnette Zelezny (Psychology).
- A state-of-the-art shared resource facility will be developed. This facility will include instrumental support in the areas of proteomics, functional genomics, and bioinformatics to nurture biomedical research in the Central Valley.
- Three independent grants that focus on biomedical research needs of the valley are also supported; Cancer proteomics of farm workers (Dr. Jason Bush, Biology), Inter-relationship between levels of air pollution, viral infection and asthma in Central Valley (Drs. Krish Krishnan and Alam Hasson, Chemistry) and cultural differences in marital care giving interactions in Alzheimer’s disease (Dr. Amanda Mortimer, Psychology).
- Other core leaders involved in the project are: Dr. Alejandro Calderon-Urrea (Biology) and Dr. Jason Bush (Biology).
- Collaborative institutions include: UCSF-Fresno, Queens University, California Cancer Registry (Fresno),
Center for Comparative Medicine, UC Davis Medical Center, and The Burnham Institute.
- Faculty will be offered mentoring and training to enable them to submit and successfully obtain federal research grants.
- Undergraduate and graduate students from Fresno State will gain valuable lab skills and knowledge as they take advantage
